Curriculum

At St. John Vianney Catholic School, we aim to educate the whole child.  Every teacher in every classroom looks not only to engage our children and hold them to high academic standards, but to give them opportunities that will help them grow in all areas of their development. In our balanced approach, teachers work together to find cross-curricular ways to inspire and connect with your child in varied and unique ways.

As a Catholic school, we look not only to educate our children in the Faith, but to help them become leaders in the outside world by living Christian lives. Our children, at all ages, are not only assisted with peer interactions and guided as they learn how to respectfully live and work with one another, but taught to extend the gifts of Christian love and generosity throughout the world.  Our children, in all grades, participate in community outreach projects that illustrate to them their own responsibility in caring for God’s Creation.

Pre-Kindergarten

The Pre-Kindergarten program at St. John Vianney serves children ages 3-5 and is the beginning of a purposeful spiritual and educational journey.  At SJV, we believe in educating the whole child by focusing on intellectual, social, emotional, physical, spiritual and creative growth. Our philosophy is to provide a stimulating environment in which activities are planned to help your child succeed at his/her own level of development. Learning is spontaneous as children learn from each other and teachers act as facilitators in the learning process.  We believe that a quality education acknowledges the innate curiosity of children and their desire to understand and master their environment.

Kindergarten

Fostering a love of learning form the foundation of our Kindergarten classroom.  Your child will excitedly explore all traditional curricular areas, with a heavy focus on phonics and literacy.  Each child strengthens their reading ability, while also engaging in a rigorous mathematics program designed to continue the strong number-sense that will serve as a foundation for more complex mathematics in later years. Our children’s curiosity and understanding of the mysteries of our faith are nurtured through teachings of the bible.  Your child will begin to learn the scientific process by forming hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, and communicating conclusions through hands- on Science experiments and observations. The Social Studies curriculum deepens students’ awareness of how they fit into the broader community, focusing on human rights and appreciation of cultural and individual differences. Your child will begin exploring with technology in addition to Spanish, Art, Music, Library, and Physical Education.

First Through Fourth Grade

The elementary grades move beyond introductions and focus on developing mastery in the core curricular areas. Emphasis is placed on reading ability and fluency and establishing solid basic skills in mathematics with strong number sense. Faith formation is continued including preparation for the first sacraments. In Social Studies, your child will be challenged to understand and demonstrate the concepts of society and community, and utilize the study of world and United States history to understand these ideas at a nuanced level. Fundamental concepts of Earth and Life Science are studied, highlighting the scientific process including data collection and analysis. In addition to the core curriculum,  STEM/Technology, Spanish,  Art, Physical Education,  Music and Library are all included in the day to day learning.

Fifth through Eighth Grade

The focus shifts from mastery of basic skills to higher order thinking as your child continues to grow in our Middle School program.  The core curriculum of Religion, Science, Literature, Language Arts, and Social Studies are all continued and your child will transition from general Mathematics to Algebra. These core subjects are departmentalized, exposing your child to changing classrooms throughout each day and learning from teachers who are specialized in their subject area. STEM, Art, Physical Education, and Music all continue to develop with the opportunity to learn Publications and Drama as well. Your child will be taught study skills and how to be independent learners to adequately prepare her/him for high school.
